Six Steps to Bathroom Plumbing

April 30, 2021

Putting a new bathroom is an exciting project, especially if you chose the layout and fixtures yourself. But doing so requires knowledge on how to install the pipes. Although this may sound challenging, bathroom plumbing can be done on your own. It lets you avoid pouring money down the drain. Here are the steps on how to plumb your own bathroom:

Decide on the Placement of the Plumbing Fixtures

The first step is figuring out where the sink, shower, toilet, and bathtub will be positioned. This will help you in laying out the lines. You need to carefully mark the exact placements so you’ll know where to cut and drill. To prepare for installing the water lines, locate the water valves and shut them off.

Install the Water Lines

In a standard bathroom, five water lines are typically installed (one cold and hot water line for the sink, shower, and bathtub, and a cold water line for the toilet). The sink and bathtub faucets require flexible water lines, so make sure you attach the correct ones. After the installation, you can smoothen the copper pipes using sandpaper before soldering the lines to the main one.

Attach the Drain Lines

The sizes of the drain lines you need vary per fixture. For the toilet, one that is 3-4 inches is required. It is usually 1.5 inches for the sink and 2 inches for the bathtub. When attaching the pipe to the toilet drain, make sure the latter is directed down the main drain line.

Install the Toilet

Attach the closet flange/flat rim from the waste pipe to the bowl. Use a strong adhesive to hold the flange/rim in place and make sure the slot lines align with the bolt holes. The easiest way to ensure the toilet is leveled is by sitting on it and moving it to and fro. Once the bowl is installed properly, tighten the bolts and the washers.

Install the Sink

You can start by placing the base/stand of the sink in position. Measure where the floor bolt should go and mark it. This will make the drilling precise. Using a nut and bolt, attach the hole to the floor. Connect the sink to the hot and cold water lines before installing the rest of the sink fixtures.

Install the Tub and Shower Unit

Mark the floor so you can easily know where the drain should go. Run the drain line and ensure it’s aligned. Use an adhesive to connect the waste line to the drain of the tub. Make sure the tub is in place and confirm if it’s leveled properly.
